Named after a family of Mormon refugees from Utah that came to southern Alberta in the 1889s and 1890s, the village had many comfortable homes, a store, a sawmill, and logging camps in the near vicinity. The small village depended upon sheep ranching and later cattle ranching and grain farming. It was thought the railroad would come when a spur line was proposed in 1904 but it never materialized. A new town site some 10 miles from Caldwell but close to the railroad sprang up and Caldwell began to fade. It soon began to take on the appearance of a deserted village as people moved to the new town site. Not everyone moved, however. Some of the small farmers and ranchers remained until the 1950s when they also left leaving scores of deserted log buildings. It is now the kind of area ghost towners hope to find..H.B. Chenoweth
