Processing its final coal in 1962, Coalspur was the last mine to close in Alberta’s Coal Branch.Located on 5,000 acre on the east side of the Coal Branch near the rail line, the Coalspur operation started in 1909. However, the mine had several difficulties in its history, including a devastating underground fire in 1915, which closed it down. But the town itself thrived for decades, servicing railway and foresty workers, and also becoming a key stop over for travellers in the Coal Branch. However, when the mine closed, most of the residents left and today Coalspur is home to only a few residents.Submitted by Johnnie Bachusky. Submitted by: Johnnie Bachusky
