In all of Alberta there is no single territory more challenging and rewarding to the ghost towner than the rugged and scenic Drummheller Valley. Created by the massive glacial action of the “Ice Age” of the last 100 thousand years, it is known also as the “Dinosaur Valley.” Gigantic reptiles such as the Gorgosaurus, Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus Rex roamed here filling the valley with their awesome roars. The first settlers arrived in 1896 and saw a peaceful setting unlike anything they had seen before. Sam Drummheller came to the area after a successful career as a wheat farmer in Washington State and opened one of the first coal mines in the valley and later lent his name to the city that soon began to grow. Anyone entering Drumheller on Highway 9 from the north has already seen Dinny, a life-size replica of Tyrannosaurus Rex, which stands in all its awesomeness beside the bridge crossing the Red Deer River. There is so much to be seen in the Drumheller Valley that several days is not unusual for the avid ghost towner.
