Central Alberta REMAINS: Old Fort replica. |
There is an old building at Fort Victoria now used as a museum. It is worth
seeing. Fort Victoria, about eight miles south of the town of Smoky Lake
on Highway 28, started out as a Methodist Mission. It became a Hudson’s
Bay Company post and evolved into the thriving but tiny village of Pakan
only to be abandoned and left derelict. Then, in 1971, it was brought
back to life when Alberta’s Heritage Sites branch sent a group
of students and graduate archeologists to dig, to study and, hopefully,
to restore the village to its former prominence. The replica of the old
fort has within its compound miniatures of most everything the old fort
once contained. In short, it is one place that no ghost towner will want
to pass up. H.B. Chenoweth |
