Silver Creek Wilderness Park is the home of the once busy little coal-mining hamlet of perhaps 75 people. Coal was discovered there in 1904 and Skunk Hollow blossomed to its peak population and included a post office, general store, dance hall, and the usual buildings of mining companies. Skunk Hollow met the fate of many communities that depended upon one industry for their existence. When coal mining became unprofitable in the 1920s, the mines closed and people moved away. Not much is left but some piles of slack coal and the remnants of an icehouse. H.B. Chenoweth
