East Central Alberta REMAINS: After the tornado, not much. |
Sunnynook, some 30 miles southeast of Hanna, got its start in 1918. Things began to improve when the railroad came through in 1921. The village boasted a general store, two lumberyards, a poolroom, a hardware store, a furniture store, and a drugstore. There was also a gambling hall that stayed open 24 hours a day and was reputed to be the most profitable business in town. Sunnynook was a bustling town of 300 at its peak but started to go down hill in the 1940s. It was followed by a tornado some years later that destroyed many of the then empty buildings and the hamlet became a true ghost town. H.B. Chenoweth |
