Ballycroy was a pioneer town of the 1820s built along the banks of a creek that supported a sawmill and a gristmill. As the town grew, stores and hotels were built and served the population until 1875 when a fire destroyed much of the town. It was during better years that the populace flocked to the hotels for dances that lasted through the night and into the morning. It was not unusual for fights to erupt often ending in the streets as the temperance movement had not yet reached Ballycroy. The town was rebuilt after the fire of 1875 but it was never the same. The railroads had come to a nearby town and, one by one, businesses moved there from Ballycroy. Submitted by: Henry Chenoweth |
