Berens River has the reputation of being Ontario’s remotest ghost town. It also has the reputation of being the only ghost town with a bowling alley. It became a ghost town in 1948, complete with homes, a hospital, apartments, a swimming pool, a jail and the bowling alley. The town blossomed with the gold rush of the 1920s. As with Uchi Lake, Berens River was plagued with the problems and difficulties of its isolation. The mine started operations in 1937 and the town grew to a population of 650. The town prospered until the start of World War II and then suffered the same fate as the town of Uchi Lake. The mine finally closed in 1948 and the town fell silent but remains undisturbed to this day. Submitted by: Henry Chenoweth |
