A short distance from Sunshine lie the remains
of Bodmin. Like Sunshine, Bodmin depended upon its mill for survival. In
1854 its first grist and sawmills were built along the Maitland River. The
site named after the county seat of Cornwall, England. By 1861, there was
a general store, a shoe shop, and a cabinet factory that employed a number
of male inhabitants. The town’s largest employer was the lime works
that supplied the mortar needed in many of the area’s early pioneer
log cabins. It closed in 1910 and the village was on its way to becoming
a ghost town. |
