Near Toronto REMAINS: Kilns |
If there were such a thing as a modern ghost town, Cheltenham would be one. The town was known for its brick works, which started in 1914 and lasted until 1958. It is now known as having the most impressive ruins in the Toronto area. The geologic formation known as Medina Shale proved to be ideal for the making of bricks. Kilns were built and were able to produce 90,000 bricks at a time. However, by the 1950s, Cheltenham was on the verge of becoming a ghost town and would have had it not been for the brick works. The works were shut down in 1958 but the kilns still stand, gaunt testimony to Cheltenham’s earlier days. Submitted by: Henry Chenoweth |
