The Ontario government was eager to do what it could for returning veterans from the First World War. The area known as The Great Clay Belt had been praised for its agricultural potential. The government opened the area to veterans for settlement by providing cheap land and free farming implements. Veterans and their families flocked to the area to begin a new life. The Grand Trunk Pacific Railway ran through the clay belt from Quebec City to Prince Rupert that fostered a string of railway towns and farm settlements. Given the harsh winters and difficult summers, few farms prospered. Most lasted only a year or two. The railway towns and mill towns that served the rural settlements vanished with the farms. Dunning was one such town. Submitted by: Henry Chenoweth
