REMAINS: More recently, newcomers have moved onto Germania’s old town lots and built large modern homes where the pioneer cabins once stood. However, the town’s old school has been preserved along with the old Lutheran Church.
Germania was a busy crossroads hamlet settled by Germans lured to Muskoka by the glowing and somewhat exaggerated descriptions of the area’s fertility. In 1875 the locals built a Lutheran Church and in 1892 the first post office opened. The usual businesses opened one by one and at its peak the population numbered nearly 200. But the soils proved more difficult than expected and the growing season too short for most crops. As the older generation retired, the sons moved away rather than endure the hardship of life on the farm.
