Gold was discovered on Emerald Lake as far back as 1898, yet it was only to be in 1937 that the Golden Rose Mining Co rose to the challange of exploiting the remote gold deposit. Everything was flown in an production commenced soon afterwards. A small townsite was contructed containing a few homes, general store (with unofficial post office), tennis court, cookery, bunkhouse, and hall. A population of around 140 was recorded in 1941-42. Alas the mining costs rose sharply upwards during WWII, and the government stripped gold mines of their protective status. The mine closed in 1944. Although another mine attempted to re-open the site in 1987 (Emerald Lake Resources), they soon closed in 1991, after sinking well over 20 million $ in the project. Submitted by: Yvan P.Charbonneau
