Under the guise of a philanthropic initiative to provide free land to settlers from southern Ontario, the government opened up the forested highlands between the Ottawa River Valley and Georgian Bay. Actually, the plan was nothing more than a means of providing Ontario’s lumber companies a way to log the area with cheap labor. As long as lumbering lasted, the settlements thrived. But when the magnificent pines were no more, it meant the end of markets and jobs for the settlers. The communities became ghost towns and among them was Millbridge. The town had three hotels, stores, mills, a school, a church, and a town hall. Millbridge does offer the ghosttowner a view of the long, long ago.
