Mount Healy was known during the mid 1830s for the same reason it is known today, a huge brick building that was a hotel along the shoreline of the then Grand River Canal. In its early days, Mount Healy was a riverside port with its principal industry being a lumber town. A sawmill existed on the banks of the canal and a plaster mill followed to process gypsum that lay within the banks of the canal. Eventually, the timber was depleted, the plaster mill became uneconomical to operate and the town died. But the hotel remained a focal point along the river. Nearly 150 years later, the hotel was privately purchased, renovated, and turned into a home in what is now a country living area. Submitted by: Henry Chenoweth
