At one time, Nicholson was Ontario’s most authentic and interesting ghost towns. Started around 1900, the town grew to around eight hundred inhabitants. Its economy was built around the mill that produced railway ties for the ever-expanding network of railroads. The town had several churches, boarding houses, a school, and all the other facilities to support the population. The mill burned in 1933 and the town began to die. The population dropped from eight hundred to twenty-five. By the 1970s, Nicholson was a ghost town in the most classical sense. Nothing has been done to protect and preserve the town from the elements. Still, it is one of Ontario’s most photogenic ghost towns. Submitted by: Henry Chenoweth
