REMAINS: Today, Orchardville is not a complete ghost town although much of its earliest functions have ceased. The mill has survived and there is much for the enthusiast to appreciate. |
Originally known as Normanby, Orchardville developed
as a stopping place on the Garafraxa Road when a John Orchard bought the
first parcel of land and opened a tavern. He divided his land into village
lots and by 1865had attracted a tannery, two stores, a cooper and carpenter,
and a church. There was also a blacksmith and a large general store. Later
came a gristmill and several sawmills. The town grew to include three hotels,
two churches and a school, and, at one time, a telephone office. |
