COMMENTS:
Not that old, recently abandoned by the company. REMAINS: Many few buildings. |
During the early 1900s, Point Anne actually consisted of two company towns. One was the Belleville Portland Cement Company and the other was the Lehigh Portland Cement Company town. The Belleville plant was closed in 1914. However, while both company towns were producing cement, an independent community grew up between the two. It was here that stores, schools, churches and nearly a hundred homes were established to serve the two company towns. During the 1920s, there was a major consolidation of cement plants across Ontario reducing twenty or more plants to three. The post World War II building boom aided the industry until the 1970s when the Point Anne plant was closed, dismantled and the townsite sold to the residents. Submitted by: Henry Chenoweth |
