Small schooner harbors once dotted the coastline of Prince Edward County and were the only means of transporting lumber and crops. But all that ended with the arrival of the railroads. Some of the harbor communities survived as farm villages and others just faded away. Port Milford was one of the latter. Earlier, however, Port Milford was an important shipping point for Prince Edward County’s farm products, particularly Canadian barley, which was in high demand during the American Civil War. Later, the town was selected as the site for a canning plant. It had a population of about one hundred residents. During the 1950s, the canning plant was closed and only its foundations remain today.
