COMMENTS:
REMAINS: The most striking element of the site is the layout of the streets and the few buildings that line them. The streets still display the names from the 1846surven and are typical of the 19th century such as Wellington, Adelaide, Victoria and Albert. |
The townscape of Shrewsbury was conceived to
become a major shipping port on the shores of Lake Erie. The initial plan
included a courthouse, a jail, a church, and a market square. The harbor
would be developed into docks and piers along with a fort and shipyard.
It was to be the county town of Suffolk County. But when Suffolk County
was merged with Kent County, the county town was no longer needed and Shrewsbury
remained largely undeveloped. Later the townsite became popular with cottagers
and a number lots soon sprouted summer homes. |
