COMMENTS:
REMAINS: Several of the early village houses still stand, some occupied by those who remember Uffington as a once busy village. |
Uffington still retains a small
population but compared to its prime a century ago, it is but a vestige.
During the 1880s and 1890s the land around Uffington was busy with farmers
growing hay and with lumbermen felling the tall pine trees. Two general
stores opened about a mile apart. The town developed between the two locations
and included three churches Anglican, Presbyterian, and Methodist. There
was a two-story hotel, a blacksmith shop, an agricultural society, and a
town hall. |
