Settlers began to settled the area in 1902, timber operations were also conducted at the same time, and with the advent of the Elk Lake Silver Rush of 1908 a brach line was built between New Elk Lake to Earlton. A siding and station was promptly established, and a sparse village bagan to form. Bunkhouses for the bushmen, and sawmill workers, farms scattered about made for a picturesque scene. Small silver deposits were discovered and mined at a profit adding another source of employement. From 1910-1918 was its boom period as a store and Post office (1914-18) opened. The Great Haileybury fire of 1922 destroyed the settlement and it didn't recover. The name was taken out from Longfellows, Hiawatha. Submitted by: Yvan P.Charbonneau
