Not far from Victoria Mines is the site of what was once the town of Worthington. Its demise is unique in the annuals of ghost towns. Mining operations began at Worthington around 1893 following the discovery of rich nickel deposits. Things went well until 5:50 on the morning of October 4, 1927 when the earth around the mine began to shake and collapsed into a gigantic hole in the ground dragging houses, mine buildings, and railway track with it. That no one was killed was due to the mine foreman who, the day before, noticed strange movements of the earth in the mineshafts. He ordered an evacuation that evening that saved the lives of many townspeople. Worthington did not recover. The great chasm created by the collapse is now a lake. Submitted by: Henry Chenoweth
