Opemican served many purposes throughout its history, first as a natural
camp site for natives and later French fur traders, and in the 1883 a hotel.
As lumbering progressed Northwards on the Ottawa Valley lumberman preferred
this protective site to gather their lumber to float it down the lake and
river. Steamers and warping scows (Argos)later plowed the lake and utulised
the site for wintering. Later adding large shops for the maintenance and
production of steamers. Numerous buildings still stand today, a healthy
reminder of yesterday. (It is a historical park, but there are no markings
indicating so) |
