The town of Oatman and four other ghost towns have been selected as some
of the best cost-free attractions in Arizona and among the best free attractions
in America. The ghost towns are among 13 free attractions in Arizona that
are highlighted in a new book by the nation's leading publisher of guidebooks
about free and low-cost travel destinations. The book, SEE AMERICA FREE,
suggests that travelers to Arizona should take time to explore its off-the-beaten-track
attractions and its wide variety of attractions and numerous free historical
museums. Oatman, probably the state's most famous ghost town, draws thousands
of visitors each year because many of its historic buildings still stand,
including the Oatman Hotel, where Clark Gable and Carol Lombard spent
their wedding night. The other ghost towns featured in SEE AMERICA FREE
are all within a short drive of Sierra Vista: Harshaw, with its stone
and adobe ruins and the remains of a cemetery; Washington Camp, with several
abandoned buildings; Mowry, where parts of buildings still stand, and
Gleeson, which has substantial remains and a picturesque cemetery. Like
all other free attractions described in SEE AMERICA FREE, the ghost towns
were selected for their wide appeal to traveling families and also for
their unusual historical value. Among the other "best of Arizona" free
attractions in the guidebook are Coronado National Memorial west of Bisbee;
Fountain Hills Fountain near Phoenix; the Colorado River Indian Tribes
Museum at Parker; Arizona State Museum and Pueblo Grande Museum & Park
of Phoenix; the Old Governor's Mansion at Prescott; Fort Huachuca Military
Museum near Sierra Vista, and McPhaul Bridge north of Yuma. SEE AMERICA
FREE was written by noted travel and camping author Don Wright, whose
other books include Guide to Free Attractions, Guide to Free Campgrounds,
Camping on a Shoestring and a dozen others related to travel, camping
and the RV-lifestyle. The 224-page softcover book is available at bookstores,
Amazon.com and from the publisher, Cottage Publications, 24396 Pleasant
View Drive, Elkhart, IN 46517; 800-272-5518 (www.cottagepub.com). (For
