It was a traditiaonal Hungwitch'in or Han village of the Athabascan on the Yukon River. It became a gold rush town. The US military established a post there during the 1800's due to it's proximity to the Canadian border and it's ideal location for steamboats to land. The presence of Fort Egbert, and the location along the river, as well as the presence of gold, led to the establishment of the Townsite of Eagle, later to become the City of Eagle in 1901.
