COMMENTS:
Vienna (pronounced vi' eh nah) was a major river landing and port from the 1850's through 1900. An important ferry crossing for north-south travel from Pickens County to Sumter County. Ferry was still in use in 1920. Near the confluence of the Sipsey and Tombigbee Rivers, was connected by ferry over Sipsey at its mouth to the Mouth of Sipsey Landing in Greene County. These two landings exported most of the cotton for south Pickens and north Greene counties. After railroads were built to present Aliceville, commerce and travel through here died. Land in private ownership. Public access area to Tenn-Tom Waterway. Reknown in its day for cotton warehouses and saloons. Stone monument at site of town. REMAINS: Few piles of bricks, some foundations, unnamed cemetery |
