NAME: Copper Mine COUNTY: Apache ROADS: 2WD LEGAL INFO: T39N, R7W CLIMATE: Hot Summers BEST TIME TO VISIT: Accessible all year 'round |
COMMENTS:
Based, as the name indicates, on nearby copper deposits; after the deposits played out, it was a trading post for the Navajos of the area. (Located northeast of The Gap.) REMAINS: Extensive: standing structures include the old trading post, houses, etc. |
The copper deposit was apparently originally discovered in the 1880s, and extracted by the Coconino Copper and Chemical Company, which used some immense and unique steam-powered half-tracks to pull the ore wagons to Flagstaff for processing. Submitted by: Kurt Wenner |
