Metcalf's post office was established August 25, 1899 and discontinued May 15, 1936. Once a town of 4000 to 5000 people, now covered by mine tailings, Metcalf lasted through the depression years. The copper mine, originally discovered in 1870, was the mainstay of the town. This town even had its own wood burning railroad nicknamed the "little emma" that brought ore out of its canyon. The townsfolk left as the mines played out. Today, nothing is left. -GT
