Steling was discovered by Robert Groom in 1865 and was the largest operation near Prescott at the time. Mills and other buildings were built but the mine never amounted to much. About every 20 years the mines were worked again but to no avail. Not much more than $10,000 in gold was ever produced from the mine. Today only the mines remain and are difficult to find.
