The mine that was to be the mainstay of Winchester was discovered on March 15, 1909 by Dick Wick Hall. Instantly, a town of 2000 people sprang up including a telephone line and an auto stage to Vicksburg. The ore at the mine made such a big ruckus that Winchester was soon the largest town along the entire Arizona-California Railroad. Only a month after the mine was opened it shut down extracting only $30,000 in gold. As quickly as the town had sprung, it died. Today, there are small remnants left. |
