NAME: Belfort COUNTY: Mono ROADS: 4WD GRID #(see map): 3 CLIMATE: Snow in Winter, mild in summer. BEST TIME TO VISIT: Only in the summer. |
COMMENTS: A
rugged jeep trail takes you up to 10,800 feet in the Sweetwater
Mountains to Boulder Flats. Belfort located here, directly above
the site of Star City. Several cabins, foundations, mines and
AMAZING views make it defintely worth the trip! The road gets
very narrow for the last 1/4 mile, you might consider parking
below the switchbacks and hiking the remainder of the way. REMAINS: Several cabins, foundations, mines and tailings. |
This district started at about the same time the Bodie mines were playing out around 1880. Nearby towns of Star City, Cameron and Clinton were larger at the time but Belfort has the only remains of any consequence today. The mines were worked sporadically for gold and silver into the 1890's. Submitted by: Cat Evans |
