GRID: 1
CLIMATE: Mild Winter, Very Hot Summer
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Fall, Winter, or Spring
COMMENTS: On the eastern shore of the Salton Sea, about 350 full-time residents. Shore-side of town was flooded in the 70's.
REMAINS: A number of trailers, the hardware store.
Bombay Beach was born as the Salton Sea became a playground for vacationers in the 40's and 50's. This whole are was going to be California's version of the French Riviera. A number of problems arose: increasing salinity in the Salton Sea, which created major fish and bird die-offs, and a series of floods from tropical storms in the 70's. The area has never recovered and now lays in basic ruins. Bombay Beach has a few residents that hide out from the blazing sun in trailers. The shoreline of Bombay Beach is entirely flooded and salt build-up has over-run all of the buildings and trailers that were in the area. This is where the supposedly most photographed abandoned trailer is located. Submitted by: David Alexander
