Near Inyokern. REMAINS: All of the buildings have been removed. |
Claraville was once the metropolis of the region, in spite of being located at an elevation of 6000 ft. Only Havilah, and Kernville had larger populations. The last dilapidated building marking the site, has long since been removed and taken to Bakersfield's Pioneer Village. It had served as Claraville's court of justice. Of all the area mines, the Bright Star, located about 6-7 miles north, was the richest. It was owned by 3 brothers, who naturally took everything they could get out of it, and it finally collapsed. When this happened, it marked the beginning of the end for the entire district. Once abandoned by the hordes of miners, Piute Mountain has again reverted back to wilderness.
