In 1873 a sawmill was constructed by Colonel Sherman Stevens on Cottonwood Creek. Wood was put into the kilns to make charcoal . The charcoal and wood were put into a streamer which crossed Owens Lake and then the contents were hauled up to Cerro Gordo. Today the kilns remain.
