An old wooden water tower is all that remains of Douglas City. Located on the Trinity River in northern California, its history is closely related to that of a Major Pierson Reading who found the bars along the river rich in gold. This occurred in 1848. He returned home to organize a mining party, which included a number of Indian laborers. Returning to the site along the Trinity River, the group labored for about six weeks when a party of Oregonians came into the area and vigisourly protested the Major's use of Indian labor. Rather than resolve the issue, he closed up shop and returned home with $80,000 in gold to show for his six weeks of work. Submitted by Henry Chenowith. |
