Originally known as Rogersville, Quartzburg named was changed due to the amount of Quartz in the area. A vein was located and named the Big Blue mine and $1.8 million of Gold was taken. An 80 stamp mill was installed. About 200 people worked here at that time. Quartzburg was a town bent on keeping alcohol out which caused saloon keeper Adam Hamilton to move his saloon 1 mile south. This new saloon area became known first as Whisky Flat and later as Kernville. In 1868 Kernville received its first post office. As one can guess, Kernville and Quartzburg became rival towns until 1883 when the Big Blue burned. A little activity remained here until 1907 . Now, Lake Isabella covers the old towns. In 1951 the residents of old Kernville were allowed to choose a new site, which is the site of the new Kernville. There is still a cemetery left from the original Kernville and Quartzburg. |
