Mammoth City was one of the highest cities in California at an elevation of 9000 feet. Gold was the mainstay and was mined from 1877 to 1881. At one time the population exceeded 2500 people. Today there are only sunken foundations remaining. Below the town of Mammoth City are the ruins of Mill City and just up the road by Lake Mary is Pine City. These towns include Mill City, Benton, Lundy, Tioga, Silver Mountain, and Monitor.
