It is said the Mormon Bar area is neglected by historians. The reason dates back to a human skull unearthed while a Mrs. Ellison was planting tomatoes in her garden. An archeologist from Sacramento, after examining the skull and the area, stated that all evidence pointed to a large village once existed here, at least several hundred years before the white man came to the area. Mrs. Ellison continued to unearth relics of a bygone era but refused to allow them to be examined for further classification. The Mormon Bar area is technically not in the Mother Lode, thereby giving the town of Mariposa the distinction of being the southern terminus of the Mother Lode.
