Named for nearby Picacho Peak, this town began around 1862 when rich gold deposits were discovered and claimed. Much of the ensuing town was submerged when the Laguna Dam was completed in 1909. The most remarkable thing that happened here happened in 1904 when a main belt broke at the mill sending a 21 ton flywheel sailing through the roof. It landed nearly a half mile away and did much damage. Today mining activity remains and the area is closed to the public.
