Part of the Black Diamond Mines Regional park REMAINS: Old cemetery, mines, and one mine turned into a museum. |
From the 1860s through the turn of the century , five coal mining towns thrived in the Black Diamond area: Nortonville, Somersville, Stewartville, West Harley and Judsonville. As the location of California's largest coal mining operation, Nearly four million tons of coal were removed from the mine's. Nothing is left of the towns, but in the way back of the park you can explore two mines. And a small mine someone made into a house, known as "Jim's Place". Submitted by: Jesse Unick |
