Now part of the Cuyamuca State Park, this town was once the source of much legal controversy. Four men owned the land the mine is now on. They did not know the land had rich ore, but when the Julian gold rush was one, ore was found on their property. Of course they wanted royalties so off to court the case went and it wasnt settled until 1873. The mine was actually discovered in 1870 by William Skidmore. The mine was named after Stonewally Jackson, but Jackson was dropped due to civil war animosities. After producing over $1 million in Gold, the main shaft collapsed in 1926. Today a cabin remains serving as an exhibit/museum. |
