Just south of the Oregon border on Highway 99 in the scenic Klamath country is Yreka, a town that did not get its start as a gold camp until 1851. Oregonians who had come south hoping to find their fortune in the area accidentally discovered gold. They had given hope and were on their way out when one of the mules while feeding pulled up a tuft of grass and there were yellow flecks in the roots. That was the beginning of the big rush to the north border. Within six weeks 2000 miners had left the Mother Lode and flocked into what is now Yreka. The town is today as appealing as it was in the 1950s and has much to offer the ghosttowner.
