Alder was a mining and lumber camp that had the advantage of being on the main line of the D.&R.G. Railroad. Mining never amounted to much but lumber did. The town supplied nearly all of the lumber used in the construction of the railroad bridges between Salida and Alamosa. It also supplied lumber for Bonanza and other nearby mining camps.
