NAME: Capital City or Galena City
COUNTY: Hinsdale
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 7
CLIMATE: Cold winter with snow, cool summer.
BEST TIME TO VISIT:
Summer
COMMENTS: Near Lake City.
REMAINS: A few original buildings.
A man named George T. Lee lived here who thought this towns was going to surpass Denver and become the capitol of Colorado. He built an impressive brick house and led the movement to change the name to Galena City. It was never even made the county seat. Despite its lack of political clout, the town was pretty much owned by Lee as he had his hand in everything that went on. The population never really exceeded 800 people although there were buildings covering the 200 acre townsite for more people than that. The town was pretty much dead by the late 1890's although some activity continued into the 1900's.
