The beginning of the Elkton mine is a story to add to the Cripple Creek legend. It is said a man by the name of John W. Bernard, who nothing about prospecting, spent his first night in the Cripple Creek area sleeping on the ground. When he awoke the following morning, he staked the first likely rock pile he could find and named it for a pair of elk horns lying nearby. The Elkton produced more than thirteen million dollars in its day. Elkton, the town, grew around the mine and in time absorbed the towns of Arequa, Eclipse, and Beacon Hill. The population at its peak numbered about 3,000 persons in 1905. Much remains of Elkton today and ruins of the Arequa Mill are still visible. Submitted by Henry Chenoweth.
