ENGINEER CITY

NAME: Engineer City
COUNTY: Ouray
ROADS: 4WD
GRID: 8
CLIMATE: Cold winter with snow, cool summer
BEST TIME TO VISIT:
Summer
COMMENTS: Near Animas Forks.
REMAINS: Mine remnants, a few building remnants.

In 1875, Engineer City was the largest city in Colorado with more than four hundred miners that did not have a saloon. They were too busy locating silver lodes to spend their time in a bar. Engineer City was located atop Engineer Mountain, above the timberline, at an elevation of 13,000 feet. It was virtually impossible to reach the site during the winter and difficult under ideal conditions. Some of the roads were narrow cliff ledges, barely wide enough for wagons and crew. Now, only a rugged trail for four-wheel drive vehicles will take the hardy ghost town visitor to the spot. Submitted by Henry Chenoweth.
