NAME: Finntown COUNTY: Lake ROADS: 2WD GRID: 5 CLIMATE: Cold snowy winter; mild summer BEST TIME TO VISIT: Summer |
COMMENTS:
Deserted. Located east of Leadville
on a hill overlooking Leadville. REMAINS: A number of remaining structures of interest. . |
Dates unknown. This was originally named Cleator Moor Gulch since it was occupied by English immigrants from a mining district of that name in England. It later became occupied by Finnish and Swedish immigrants and thus named Finntown. Submitted by Tom McCurnin. The EPA has been "cleaning up" some tailings piles in the Leadville area protecting us from goodness knows what. At least one photogenic mining structure at Finntown appears to have been demolished. There were many test crucibles scattered about this structure a few years ago. There are some new roads in the area. As best as I could determine, Ibex City and Stumpftown/Stumpfville have not been touched...yet. --Harold Frodge, 9/99 |
