Ironton was a major transportation junction between Red Mountain and Ouray in addition to having some of its own mines. Ironton had a peak population of over 1000 and had two trains arriving daily from Silverton. There were many chain stores from the nearby cities of Ouray and Silverton. The town lived into the first part of this century and has slowly faded since then. - Ghosttowns.com

Hello, I've recently started a history for St. Michael's Catholic Church, in Delta, Colorado. Unfortunately most of the archival materials were lost when the Diocese was moved from Denver, to the newly appointed Pueblo Diocese in 1942. You may wonder how this ties in to Ironton, Colorado, but there is a connection. St. Michael's was built in 1910. Between 1910 and 1912, a bell was installed in the belfry. The origin of the bell is the link between St. Michael's and Ironton. The bell was cast by H. Stuckstede of St. Louis, Missouri in 1890 and was apparently put into a church in Ironton. Thank you... Toni Vogel
