Gold was first discovered here in 1775 by a Spanish explorer, Jaun de Rivera. Exactly 100 years later, prospectors discovered several rich lodes that led to the city of La Platt being formed almost overnight. Silver was mined along with the gold, and when the town was hard it by the silver panic in 1893, new gold discoveries kept the town alive. The ore began to play out during the early 1900s, but the La Plata Gold Mining Corporation, headquartered in Salt Lake City, later reopened the Bessie G mine which produced over three quarters of a million dollars up to the time of its closing in 1955. Today, the town is truly a ghost town. Submitted by Henry Chenoweth.
